Designer, Jamie Kurtis, launched her millinery business in 1989, opening a retail shop on Newport's historic Thames Street. Named for Kurtis' late grandmother, Edna Mae Thorn, who came of age in the 1920's, her designs are infused with the elegance & romance of an earlier time. Vintage adornments, handwrapped velvet & silk florals, Austrian crystals, French ribbons & chenille dot veilings come together to create beautiful hats of linen straw and velour.
Edna Mae hats have been designed for Ascot, the Kentucky Derby, and two Presidential inaugurations, as well as countless weddings and special events. In addition to local New England publicity, Victoria Magazine has featured Edna Mae's on several occasions.
As wedding gowns have become more elegant and simple in design, bridal headpieces have become a more prominent and unique accessory to the dress. Edna Mae's began designing custom headdress in 1991 and to date offers the finest collection of handmade tiaras and crowns. We service our clientele by appointment only to ensure undivided attention to every detail. Edna Mae's completes the bride's ensemble with estate reproduction jewelry for herself and her bridal party, silk evening wraps & gloves, beaded bags, and of course, veils of every cut, edging and adornment.
In addition to the exciting array of in-house custom designs, Edna Mae's offers over a hundred headpiece styles from designers in Europe, Canada and Australia.
